Slovenia, I Hardly Knew Yee

Day 42 - Sunday, May 28, 2006

Good bye Slovenia, Hello Croatia. I needed to get a move on if I wanted to catch my flight in Dubrovnik in a week. This morning I was running a little late (what else is new?) and went to the train station caught to buy my ticket for the 8:30 am train to Zagreb (2852 SIT or 11.90 €). When I went to the track where the train was, I didn’t see any train there. I was a little worried because if I missed this train the next one would be at 1:20 pm. It turns out that the train was just running late and it showed up a few minutes later. While boarding the train I met another American girl. She stayed at the Best Hostel. That was a weird coincidence because the day before I was deciding between staying at that hostel and the Most Hostel. She said she knew I was American because of my NY Yankees cap and my North Face jacket. She also said you can pick out the Americans because they carry those unbreakable water bottles.

You Can Ring My Bell

Day 41 - Saturday, May 27, 2006

Since I didn’t get a chance to take a gondola to the island in the middle of the lake, I did that today. The gondola was filled with mostly Slovenian tourists. There were many gondolas going to the island.

Come Fly With Me

Day 40 - Friday, May 26, 2006

Located by the Julian Alps, Bled was the main reason I wanted to go to Slovenia. Back home earlier this year, I saw an episode of Rick Steves where he was touring through Northern Italy but made a detour to Slovenia just to check out Lake Bled with its church in the middle of the lake. It looked so marvelous on TV and after seeing it in person, I was not disappointed.

Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Day 39 - Thursday, May 25, 2006

Before departing from the hostel today, I took advantage of the free breakfast they offered; cereal, cold cuts, bread, cheese, porridge and fruit. It was definitely better than any free breakfast I had in Italy.

I had absolutely picked the wrong day to go to Piran. This morning the sun was out and it was absolutely gorgeous. There were definitely more tourists in town today. I think they were bused in from another town; probably from Portoroz, a bigger town 2 km southwest. Here are some more pictures from Piran while I was waiting for the bus: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Blame It On The Rain

Day 38 - Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Today I would be leaving Italy and heading to Slovenia (part of the former Yugoslavia). I didn’t get to check out all the parts of Italy that I wanted to but I only have about a week and a half left until my flight from Dubrovnik. In that week and a half I will try to see Slovenia and Croatia.

Free Water Bus Rides

Day 37 - Tuesday, May 23, 2006

I decided to stay another day in Venice. The girls also had another day in Venice but didn’t have a room due to some confusion on the day when they booked the hostel. We had to check out today so I woke up early and scouted out some hotels.

Pigeons Attack Venice

Day 36 - Monday, May 22, 2006

Venice consists of 117 island, 150+ canals and 400 bridges. Only 3 bridges cross the Grand Canal that snakes through the city; the Rialto, Accademia and Scalzi. There are no cars in Venice. You get around on foot, gondola or by water bus.

2 Train Stations, 1 Name

Day 35 - Sunday, May 21, 2006

Last night I decided I would not stay an extra day in Cinque Terre like I had originally planned. Cinque Terre was nice but I thought the Amalfi Coast was much prettier. I hiked the whole trail and there wasn’t anything else I saw worth doing besides sitting around and relaxing. Instead I would be headed to Venice.
